To improve students’ ability to speak Chinese and enrich after-class activities, the Students’ Union of Department of Chinese Language and Literature is organizing a school-wide Chinese-speaking contest to be held on Saturday next week (27 January) at the Students’ Auditorium. Those who are interested in taking part in it may sign up with the monitor of their classes before Tuesday next week. Five professors will be invited to be judges. The first six winners will be given awards. Everybody is welcome to be present at the contest.

The cartoon vividly illustrates a man is astonished at numerous personal data out of a computer. The data include home address, hobbies and interests, employer, Identification Card number, phone number, credit card nnumber, personal photographs, social relatonships, and so on.
In recent years, a great many mass media focus on the activities of film stars, pop singers and even ordinary people. First and foremost, reporters disguise their identities, infiltrate the subject’s business and family, or even bug and wiretap them——to get the news by whatever means are necessary. In addition, since celebrities are newsworthy figures, and their stories draws far more attention than those of other people, it is natural that the press tries to attract the public to buy their magazines or surf on net by featuring private life of famous people. Genrally speaking, a large readership means the rise in the circulation of their publications, hence a huge profit.
In my view, exposing the privacy of people threatens to do more harm than good. In the first place, those exposed people can be severely injured by such public attention. In the second place, we have the right to keep our own privacy, the basic right which should be respected, proetected and guaranteed by our laws and regulations under whatever circumstances.
