　　Where to Live — In the City or the Country?

　　Many people appreciate the conveniences of the city. They can take less time to go to work because of the shorter distance and better transportation. They can enjoy themselves in restaurants, theaters and shopping malls. They can also get more information, better health care and better education.

　　Also country life has many attractions. Fresh air, beautiful scenery, and singing birds will enable people to have a quieter and healthier life. Far from large crowds of people here and there, we will be able to have a better mood and concentrate on what we are doing.

　　However, both have their own disadvantages. Living in the city, people are likely to suffer heavy traffic, poor housing, air pollution and noises, while in the country; life will not be so convenient as in the city.

　　As far as I am concerned, I prefer living in the country. I have been living in a big city for many years, and fed up with all the noises, which are a big annoyance both during the day and at night. It is my wish to live a peaceful, healthy and relaxing life in the country.

　　Nowadays, can any Chinese enjoy the luxury of owning a private car? If you can afford it, having a car of your own means no more traveling to work on crowded buses or subway trains, and you can drop off the children at school by the way. Moreover, it also means that you can enjoy the weekends and holidays better, because with a car you can go to places where the regular buses and trains do not go, and so you can find a quiet scenic spot with no crowds.

　　However, there are drawbacks to owning a car. For one thing, with the increase in car ownership in recent years, the roads are becoming more and more crowded, often making the journey to work more of a nightmare than a dream. For another, it is not cheap to run a car, as the prices of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, not to mention the prices you have to pay for a license and insurance coverage.

　　Having considered both sides of the argument, I have come to the conclusion that the advantages of owning a car outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, it seems to me that China should increase its output of automobiles and enlarge the private car market. The result would be that cars would become cheaper, while at the same time the extra demand would encourage the auto industry to produce more efficient and family-oriented vehicles.

There has been a heated discussion over the growing income gap now. Some people hold that the gap is natural because it reflects different contributions that different people make in their work.. In their view, those people with high income work hard and long. Besides, these people bring high efficiency, and create more wealth. Accordingly, they deserve high pay.

On the other hand, there are always some people who view this gap negatively. They believe that a lot of crimes happen as a result of this income gap. Some people make so little from their work that they risk taking criminal acts to get rich. In fact, experts have long found out that most cases of crime are directly related to low income. There is another point to back up a negative view against income gap. For most people, income gap may destroy the satisfaction that they obtain from work.

As anything has two sides, so does the problem of income gap. Personally, I believe that this gap may motivate people to compete better in job market. When this gap is growing too wide, however, our government should make some policies to get rid of its negative consequences.

　　22. Career or Family: which is more important?

When asked about their opinion of career and family, people always respond differently. Some people deem it more important to pursue their career, while there are always other people who argue that family should be the number one in one’s life.

It goes without any question that career plays a key role in our life. In the very first place, career can give us an aim to live on. Without career, much of our living time will be certainly wasted. What’s more, career can provide us with a means to live on. Most of the people earn their income from a job. On the other hand, family is also an indispensable part of life, as many people will admit. Family is always regarded as a place where we can escape from troubles in life. In addition, we can obtain a sense of belonging to from family. Without it, anyone will feel lonely and desperate.

In my opinion, career and family are not in opposition to each other. Rather, they can enhance each other so that one’s life can become better and better. Therefore, it’s not a choice between right and wrong, but one between ideal and practical.

　　Advertisement has become wide spread nowadays. When we turn on the radio, or TV, or read a newspaper or a magazine, undoubtedly we find a lot of advertisement. When we walk on the streets, all kinds of roadside advertisements force their way into our sight. No one can avoid coming across advertisement in everyday life.

Advertisement does have certain advantages. Through advertising, manufacturers and sellers can introduce their products to the market and consumers can discover what products are available. Advertisement makes selling and buying easy. It helps people and promotes production.

　　However, some people think it differently. They take advertisement as deceitful tricks. They think that advertisement takes people in by boasting, cheating, and intrudes people’s consciousness and subconsciousness so much that people lose their ability to make reasonable decisions. In spite of these different opinions, advertisements are with us and are growing into the business.
